After 33 years in accounting, I’ve learnt you need to know what you want from your business before you can make sense of the numbers.
I can read a set of accounts and work out what a business can afford to carry. No set of accounts has ever answered the question many owners have about what their life looks like in the next five to ten years.
Is this business getting you where you want to go?
That needs both halves: what you want your life to look like, and what the business needs to produce to pay for it.
I start with the life you want, then work back to the numbers to help make it happen. I have my own list too, and I am living it. That is part of why I know this works.
That thinking also became a book, Turning Someday into Today, for people who want to stop saying “someday” and start making the life they want possible now.
